‘Da Vinci Code’ sequel to be published in Sept / 小説『ダ・…



A follow-up by writer Dan Brown to his hugely popular conspiracy thriller "The Da Vinci Code" will go on sale in September, the publishers and author said Monday. "The Lost Symbol," featuring Da Vinci Code protagonist Robert Langdon, will go on sale with an initial print run of five million copies on September 15, Brown said on his website. The statement on Brown's website said the new novel takes place over a 12-hour period, but gave few other details.

"This is a great day for readers and booksellers," said Sonny Mehta, chairman of the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. "The Lost Symbol is a brilliant and compelling thriller. Dan Brown's prodigious talent for storytelling, infused with history, codes and intrigue, is on full display in this new book. This is one of the most anticipated publications in recent history." Brown's smash hit "The Da Vinci Code" is the bestselling hardcover novel for adults of all time, with 81 million copies printed, according to the publishers. The Vatican bitterly criticized the book, which revolves around fictional conspiracy theories, as anti-Catholic.

A movie version of "The Da Vinci Code" starred Tom Hanks. The actor is also appearing in the film "Angels and Demons" which is based on an earlier Brown novel and due for release in May.




作家ダン・ブラウン氏のベストセラー小説『ダ・ヴィンチ・コード』の続編『The Lost Symbol』が9月に出版される。出版元とブラウン氏が20日に発表した。ブラウン氏のウェブサイトによると、主人公は前作同様、大学教授のロバート・ラングドン。12時間の間に起こる出来事を描いているというが、詳細は明らかにされていない。初版は500万部で9月15日に書店に並ぶ。ブラウン氏は、出版社を通じた声明で「この小説を執筆する作業は、奇妙で素晴らしい旅でした。12時間の物語のために５年間のリサーチを費やすのは、実にそう快なチャレンジ。ロバート・ラングドンの人生は、明らかに私の人生よりも高速で進んでいるようですね」と語っている。


出版元のKnopf Doubleday Publishing Groupのソニー・メータ会長は、「『The Lost Symbol』は素晴らしいスリラー。ダン・ブラウンの驚異的なストーリーテリングの才能が歴史、暗号、陰謀と組み合わさり、存分に表れている。近年で最も待ち望まれた出版だろう」と語った。前作の『ダ・ヴィンチ・コード』は、世界で8100万部を売り上げ、大人向けのハードカバー書籍では史上最も売れた本となった。一方、ローマ法王庁は反カトリック的な内容を含んでいるとしてこの作品を厳しく非難している。


『ダ・ヴィンチ・コード』は、トム・ハンクス主演で映画化もされた。『ダ・ヴィンチ・コード』以前に書かれた小説『天使と悪魔』も映画化されており、5月に公開される。シドニー・シェルダンの商業的フィクションに感銘を受けたブラウン氏は、文芸作家になることをあきらめ、多くの人々に読まれる小説家に方向転換したといわれるが、彼自身はもちろん、出版社も書店も「ダ・ヴィンチ・コード」のような成功を夢にも想像していなかったという。
